Cellulitis
Cellulitis is a bacterial skin infection affecting deeper layers, causing spreading redness, swelling, and warmth. It requires prompt antibiotic treatment.
Symptoms
Expanding red, warm, swollen, tender skin, usually on the lower legs with poorly defined borders. Fever, chills, and red streaking may occur.
Causes and risk
Streptococcus and Staphylococcus enter through skin breaks. Risk factors include lymphedema, obesity, prior cellulitis, diabetes, and athlete's foot.
How it is evaluated
Diagnosis is clinical. We mark redness borders to track progression. Ultrasound rules out underlying abscess. Blood cultures are reserved for systemically ill patients.
Treatment
Oral antibiotics are first-line, with MRSA coverage when indicated. Severe cases may require IV antibiotics. Our Chicago team provides close follow-up within 48 to 72 hours.
