Impetigo
Impetigo is a highly contagious superficial bacterial infection producing honey-colored crusted sores, most common in children but seen at any age.
Symptoms
Honey-yellow crusted plaques on the face around nose and mouth. Bullous impetigo produces fluid-filled blisters. Lesions may itch mildly.
Causes and risk
Staphylococcus aureus is the most common cause. Minor skin breaks and warm humid environments increase spread. Close contact and poor hygiene are risk factors.
How it is evaluated
Diagnosis is clinical. Culture is reserved for treatment-resistant cases or suspected MRSA. We check for underlying eczema.
Treatment
Topical mupirocin treats limited disease. Widespread cases require oral antibiotics. Our Chicago team educates families on hygiene and return-to-school guidelines.
