Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism means the thyroid does not make enough hormone. It can slow metabolism and affect energy, mood, bowel habits, and weight.

Symptoms

Common symptoms include fatigue, cold intolerance, dry skin, constipation, hair thinning, weight gain, and depressed mood.

Causes and risk

Autoimmune thyroid disease is a common cause. Prior thyroid treatment, certain medicines, and iodine issues can also contribute.

How it is evaluated

We review symptoms and check thyroid labs. We may also assess for anemia, vitamin deficiency, or other causes of fatigue.

Treatment

Treatment usually involves thyroid hormone replacement and repeat labs to make sure the dose is right.
