Social anxiety disorder involves intense fear of social situations where a person may be judged. It goes beyond shyness.

Symptoms

Fear of social interactions, avoidance, blushing, sweating, difficulty speaking in groups, and anticipatory worry.

Causes and risk

Temperament, family history, negative social experiences, and co-occurring depression.

How it is evaluated

Specific social fears, avoidance patterns, impact on work and relationships, and screening for related conditions.

Treatment

CBT with gradual exposure is first-line. SSRIs may be added. Social skills practice and group therapy help.
